JOB DESCRIPTION

The Director of Furniture Engineering at West Elm will set the strategic direction for the engineering team and drive successful execution of seasonal and strategic engineering initiatives. This person will partner with Sourcing, Design and Merchant executives to provide best-practice knowledge on furniture cost engineering, materials and opportunities that elevate our design aesthetic and quality standards.

Essential Responsibilities

* Lead and direct daily functions of the furniture engineering team across west elm brand and hospitality concepts
* Determine workload for staff. Recommend effective processes and procedures to improve workflow and results
* Through clear understanding of west elm business needs, guide the engineering team and development process
* Oversee the furniture product engineering of all items in the relevant product categories, including dining, bedroom, occasional and casual seating
* Gather market data on key product cost engineering opportunities that support brand strategy and product quality requirements
* Work with Design partners to support seasonal concepts and integrate appropriate merchant direction
* Direct the engineering process, coordinating with the overseas engineering teams
* Review specifications and samples and provide guidance to design, merchant and sourcing associates
* Drive calendar to ensure all deadlines and key dates are met
* Manage and develop 3+ associates
* Reports to the corporate VP of Quality Assurance with a dotted line to the brand VP of Global Sourcing
* Keep abreast of new materials, finishes, software and other related technologies
* Provide value analysis on core products thus reducing costs and improving quality

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

* Minimum 10 years professional experience required, 5 years of which were in a managerial role
* Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent experience
* Proficiency in Solid Works, 3D modeling, Adobe Illustrator and Outlook are essential
* Experience in both residential and contract grade furniture development and working knowledge of material and costing implications for both
* Knowledge of ASTM and BIFMA product specifications and regulations
